Portland — Maine Flag Company creates state flags and burgees are using a traditional appliqué. The original Maine flags and burgees are handmade right here in Maine using a traditional appliqué. This means that the tree and star are cut out and sewn directly onto the flag field. No printing is involved. The original Maine flag, which features a unique pine tree and star design, flew over Maine from 1901 to 1909. Now, more than a century after it was replaced, Mainers are beginning to display our state's first flag again.
