David Sanipass
Norway, Maine. David Sanipass is a member of the Mi'kmaq Nation (Formerly Aroostook Band of Micmacs). Maine is the ancestral homeland of the Mi'kmaq Nation and have a history here of 20,000, all of which is recorded. He was born in Ellsworth, Maine and has lived in Maine most of his life. His family followed the harvest of blueberries and potatoes. David's family are basket makers.
David makes baskets but focuses his time on basket tools including draw knives, scrapers, crooked knives, and gauges. He also makes Traditional Mi'kmaq flutes, some are now in the Abbe Museum Collections and Hudson Museum Collections. He often does storytelling and playing flute for events and schools to be able to share the Mi'kmaq history and culture with others.
