The Red Boat is a collection of interconnected stories set on the fictional Maine island of Great Whale. Characters include an enigmatic sea captain, a woman who finds herself the sole owner of the general store when her husband dies, and a female physician for whom Great Whale is a safe haven. Interwoven throughout the stories is the character of Enid, whose wisdom and guidance is essential to the islanders. The Red Boat captures the uniqueness of island life spanning generations.
