Holly Brooks

Holly was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1955. She grew up in Weston, Massachusetts and now resides in Portland Maine. Although never obtaining degrees in art, she has always found painting and drawing to be an important part of her life. She spent 10 years in the field of Landscape Architecture and then began painting full time in 1999. After an eye-opening painting trip to Todos Santos, Mexico, she realized that art would become a central focus in her life. Subsequent painting trips to Todos Santos, Arizona, New Mexico and many areas of Maine have been the inspiration for her work. Her choice of mediums are watercolor, acrylic and collage. Each has its merits. The appeal of watercolor is its translucency and unpredictable nature for surprise while acrylic allows for quick and repeated layering. The work with collage has brought in a new dimension of abstraction. Her principles with painting are to portray the subject matter with a spontaneity and succinctness while focusing on color relationships and composition. She pursues the perfection of these principles while always allowing an open door for discovery to avoid the stagnation of assembly line repetition. Recently her work has evolved into abstraction.
